Ever wondered what coffee roasted over an open flame tastes like? Tacoma-based Campfire Coffee gives you the answer. Campfire Coffee also is a Black-, woman-, and veteran-owned coffee roasting business. Whitni Henry, coowns Campfire Coffee with her husband, Quincy. Through their business, the Henrys seek to bring further accessibility to the sometimes not-so-accessible world of specialty coffee.
The couple opened the business in 2019 after a successful GoFundMe campaign. Last year, they won two awards through Kitsap Bank’s edg3 FUND competition. The $25,000 award was given to Campfire because it was deemed by the judges to have best demonstrated a commitment to the triple line business model — contributing to a community economically, socially, and environmentally. It also won the $5,000 Public Favorite Award for receiving the most public votes.
The Henrys expanded from an online-exclusive selling platform to a brick-and-mortar coffee shop in downtown Tacoma in August 2020, and since have partnered with local, youth-oriented outdoor-education nonprofits. Henry voiced an appreciation for the community’s support, noting that it had not only stood behind Campfire Coffee to help it win the Public Favorite Award but also in helping the business succeed in the first place.
Campfire Coffee is open 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday-Saturday at 1554 Market St.
